Edgar’s Search Fund & ETA Qualifications
Experience level: Executive
Open to working with clients outside the U.S.
I bring both personal and academic experience to coaching in the Search Fund and ETA space. I founded and raised a traditional search fund outside the US, securing commitments from investors across America, Spain, and the rest of the world. The fund was 100% oversubscribed in just three months, after which I led the sourcing process, acquired, and now operate an SME. My MBA at Kellogg gave me deep exposure to the US ETA ecosystem—through coursework, the Zell Fellows program, and peer collaboration—so I understand both US and international dynamics. Beyond my own journey, I’ve had first-hand exposure to self-funded search, as my wife successfully raised and acquired through that model. I also authored a paper on raising search capital, distilling insights on investor expectations and best practices for first-time searchers. This combination—traditional + self-funded perspective, US + international experience, operator + investor view—gives me a unique platform to help aspiring searchers navigate ETA with clarity and confidence. How I Can Help You: i) Deciding whether to raise a Search Fund ii) Raising capital & preparing materials iii) Designing an efficient search strategy & process iv) Evaluating opportunities v) Negotiating a deal vi) Closing a deal & bridging the equity gap vii) Navigating the first 100 days as CEO viii) Long-term strategy & operation Whether you’re still debating if ETA is right for you or already deep into the journey, I can serve as a sounding board and guide at each stage. Coaching is my way of sharing the lessons I’ve learned so you can focus on building a company that becomes a part of you.

About Edgar
Hi there — I’ve been coaching and mentoring for over a decade, helping people at every stage of their careers: from students taking their first steps in finance to professionals targeting top IB and PE roles. Over the years, I’ve worked with candidates from every background — non-targets, first-generation students, Ivy League graduates, minorities, and internationals — helping them navigate one of the most competitive recruiting landscapes in the world. My own path wasn’t straightforward. I broke into Barclays Investment Banking from a public, non-target university — back in 2011, when the acceptance rate was below 1%. I later transitioned into private equity, becoming the Associate responsible for Spain & Portugal at Pamplona Capital ($15bn AUM) while also receiving offers from other global funds. Eventually, I followed my entrepreneurial drive by founding Surca Capital, a search fund through which I acquired and now operate an SME. Academically, I completed my MBA at Kellogg—I was awarded a Fulbright scholarship, a Merit scholarship, and became a Zell Fellow. Since then, I’ve contributed to admissions decisions at Kellogg and served as chair of the Spanish Fulbright Committee. Today, my main focus is running my own investment vehicle. Coaching is something I choose to do on the side—selectively and with a personal touch—because it’s a way for me to give back. Keeping it selective allows me to work closely with each person and provide a personal, hands-on support. Outside of work, I’m passionate about the outdoors, fitness, and travel.
Why do I coach?
When I was an undergrad, I had no insider knowledge, no family connections, and no clear path into finance. What changed everything was the guidance I received from mentors and coaches who helped me refine my story, stand out, and ultimately land an offer at Barclays. That single offer didn’t just change my career—it transformed my life prospects. That’s why I coach. I know how much one opportunity can mean, and I believe everyone deserves a fair chance at it. Over the past 10+ years, I’ve helped people break into IB, PE, and growth investing—not just by drilling technicals, but by showing them how to think like insiders, present with confidence, and build careers that are both rewarding and sustainable. I enjoy this work because I know what it feels like to be on the outside looking in. Coaching gives me a way to level the playing field—so that driven, resilient people can have the same shot I did, regardless of where they start.
